Urban void, between the city and the territory

Up to the "metropolitan city", the city center remains dense, intense, full ... of urbanity. The urban voids that give the center meaning make it a dialectical dialogue. The geographic voids (rivers, valleys and meadows, massive, ridges and headlands ...) determined places of settlement, growth axes, tensions and limitations in the construction of urban form. These voids structured the Lisbon seven hundred century. But in the Lisbon of the nineteenth century, others urban voids emerge in a rapidly changing landscape. The physical voids, before outside the limits of the city, now opposed to voids of more complex and undefined nature and geometry, belonging to an urban expansion, dispersion and fragmentation But how about when the voids are not physical, measurable, geometrical? But is the noticeable lack of urbanity, social dynamics and activities, or the degradation of structures that (still) are there. Voids, which may persist in a more temporary way, depending on time of day or night. It's about one of the voids that we propose to intervene.

Baixa: re-infrastructure the city from the void

The Baixa is built from the public space. The streets and squares are the protagonists of enlightened discourse of Manuel da Maia and Eugenio dos Santos. The void here is architecture. From the void left by the disaster, re-built upon a rational and enlightened Baixa, assertive an bold. An exercise that was not afraid to tackle practices and hierarchies, designing a new order, a new infrastructure for a public city, which took more than a century to build and now faces new challenges. The void is always (infra-) structuring: because it is open space, expectant of occupation between possibility and opportunity. A new space is open, which could have always been there...

Central Park

Respecting the urban fabric of Baixa, we propose the introduction of a new urban order along the axis from the Terreiro do Paço to Rossio. In the place of the urban blocks, we build a park, another "void", critical and incisive in confrontation with the rigid - more administrative than urban – Baixa Pombalina. A Central Park from the collective imaginary of New York City, adapts and recognizes its own place in the urban fabric of Lisbon. In the water line, where has been a river, between the two most representative public spaces city, reinterpreting the memory and the challenge of the pombaline "Passeio Público". It is a space that enhances the moments that can change the routine of everyday life. Introduces plant material in a body of stone, and regulates the hydrologic flows, indispensable to the survival of the Baixa.
